GENERAL INFORMATION

The Community Foundation of South Alabama offers a unique youth program for high school students, the Youth Grant Allocation Board (YGAB).  This program broadens youth's understanding of their communities by learning about the world of nonprofit organizations, their vital services to our communities and how students can support their communities.

Under the guidance of our professional staff, YGAB members learn and actually perform the grant making process that goes on here at The Community Foundation (CFSA).  Funding for grants comes from CFSA’s Community Endowment and the YGAB Endowment.  Members are taught the basic skills of soliciting for the YGAB Endowment that would be needed as an employee of a nonprofit agency.  After learning about nonprofit organizations and performing a rudimentary needs assessment, students corporately decide on the types of programs they would like to fund, develop a Request for Proposals, evaluate grant applications and select grant recipients.  YGAB formally awards grants at a special public meeting/press conference in the spring to which parents, school administrators and nonprofits are invited.

Students have opportunities throughout the year to meet with our CFSA Board of Directors and directors of local nonprofits as well as participate in their own service projects and fundraising for the YGAB Endowment.  There are several opportunities for students to actually visit nonprofit centers.  There is a minimal amount of activity required outside the meetings.

With the support of school administrators, CFSA annually asks public and private high schools in designated counties to participate by recommending two students, one sophomore and one junior, from each school for this new program. Returning seniors may also participate.  Below are the qualities we wish for each participant to possess:

Dependable, friendly, cooperative, self-motivated, works well with others, displays positive attitude, possesses leadership skills

In good academic standing (no less than a C+ average)

Please note we are looking for students from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. Ideally, we would like for students to participate for two years.

It is our desire that students will take what they have learned with them back into their schools and into their adult lives encouraging service learning projects and becoming a leader more conscious of their own stewardship and infrastructure of their community. If you have any questions about the program, you may call our office at 251-438-5591 and ask for Janine Phillips.
