Mutant Alien action figures, Frogs and a Stuffed Moose …. OH MY!
Members of the Youth Grant Allocation Board (YGAB) donated bags full of toys to The Salvation Army Angel Tree in December. Each month YGAB members have donated their time and money to help our community. The young leaders chose The Salvation Army Angel Tree because they wanted to make Christmas morning a little brighter for needy families by bringing smiles to the faces of their children.
The tradition of The Salvation Army is an integral part of Christmas, with millions of dollars donated each year to aid needy families, seniors and the homeless. Donations to The Salvation Army provide Christmas dinners, clothing, and toys for children. According to Major Ted Morris, Director of The Salvation Army Headquarters in Mobile, The Salvation Army served 1,900 families this past holiday season and distributed more than 5,000 toys.
The Salvation Army and other nonprofit organizations experienced a decrease in donations this year due to the economy. Conversely the need for services increased as more people sought assistance for shelter and food.
The Youth Grant Allocation Board (YGAB) of The Community Foundation of South Alabama is a group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors nominated by public and private high schools in Mobile and Baldwin Counties who are given the opportunity to learn about community needs and grant making. The students are trained and directed by The Community Foundation of South Alabama staff to function as a grant committee. YGAB participants are taught to assess deficiencies within their community and develop an initiative to meet specific needs.
