Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Now Offered In 8 Counties of South Alabama

The Community Foundation of South Alabama (CFSA) is a member of the South Alabama Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Coalition (VITA) and works actively to increase awareness and participation in Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and VITA programs.

For the first time, citizens of an eight county region of South Alabama including Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Escambia, Mobile, Monroe and Washington counties will have access to Volunteer Income Tax Assistance services.

The VITA Coalition has taken advantage of community events in rural areas to raise awareness of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Earned Income Tax Credit programs that are available for working families.

Stephen Black of Impact Alabama attended the VITA campaign launch in Mobile County and spoke of the importance of the Volunteer Income Assistance and Earned Income Tax Credit programs which can make a tremendous difference in the lives of low to moderate income working families. Earned Income Tax Credits remain the single largest federal aid program for working families.

Elaine Beck, IRS Territorial Manager for Alabama and Mississippi, challenged the South Alabama VITA Coalition to double the number of returns filed using the VITA program this year. In just two years since the formation of the VITA Coalition, the number of VITA assisted returns has grown from 300 to over 1300 families. This year, the VITA Coalition hopes to assist with the filing of 1,750 tax returns in South Alabama.

Partners of the South Alabama Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Coalition include: Internal Revenue Service, Envision Coastal Alabama, Mobile Community Action, The Community Foundation of South Alabama, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Goodwill Easter Seals, Boat People S.O.S, Community Action Agency of Baldwin, Escambia, Clarke, Monroe and Conecuh Counties, United Way of Southwest Alabama, Volunteer Mobile and The University of South Alabama.
