Volunteers In Service To America Are Hard At Work In Our Community

The South Alabama Community Network, a project of The Community Foundation of South Alabama, was approved as an AmeriCorps VISTA program earlier this year. As of July 20th VISTA members began working in our community.

The Volunteer in Service to America members are located in Atmore, Grove Hill, Mobile and Monroeville. They are working with Community Action Agency of Baldwin, Escambia, Clarke, Monroe and Conecuh Counties; Escambia County RSVP; South Alabama Regional Planning Commission Area Agency on Aging; and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Monroe County.

VISTA members are serving their community by assisting local nonprofit organizations and helping with community outreach on behalf of the South Alabama Community Network. This “Network of Networks” will bring together people with an interest in building a stronger community.

The network will promote community driven information and knowledge that can be used to understand issues and identify solutions to solve community issues. Organizations and citizens will be able to add content via a web browser to a database that will serve as an information clearing house for South Alabama. The construction of the South Alabama Community Network begins this fall.

The project is made possible by The Community Foundation of South Alabama, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, J.L. Bedsole Foundation, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and The Corporation for National and Community Service.
