Youth Grant Allocation Board

The Youth Grant Allocation Board (YGAB) of The Community Foundation of South Alabama is a group of sophomores, juniors and seniors nominated by public and private high schools in Mobile and Baldwin Counties who are given the opportunity to learn about community needs and grant making.

The students are trained and directed by The Community Foundation of South Alabama staff to function as a grant committee. YGAB participants are taught to assess the deficiencies within their community; develop an initiative to meet specific needs; review grant applications; conduct site visits; and select nonprofit recipients for grants.

How Does The Program Work?
In August of each year, The Community Foundation requests recommendations for one sophomore, one junior and one returning senior from public and private high school counselors in Mobile and Baldwin Counties.  YGAB members meet monthly at various nonprofit agencies during the school year, typically on Saturday mornings from September through March.

Curriculum
-Learn about philanthropy, the nonprofit world and how to address community needs
-Participate in service projects throughout the community
-Learn about the grant making process and award grants
-Participate in fundraising for the YGAB program initiative

The Youth Grant Allocation Board gives young people the opportunity to examine and identify their values and to integrate their collective priorities throughout the grant allocation process. They have to work together, build consensus and decide which charitable projects receive funding. Through this process YGAB members learn how to participate as part of a board and to solve problems in their communities.
